Emergent Objects

Designing the technological interface through performance

Project Portfolio

The Emergent Objects project was funded by 'Designing for the 21st Century', an initiative of the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, UK. It comprised three sub-projects which addressed notions of emergence and interface.

Snake investigated the extent of interactivity and responsivity between a designed object (an interactive sculpture) and a human agent.
SpiderCrab was concerned with design development for a robotic agent, using models and theories of performance. The focus was on ways that designers and performers work together as an interdisciplinary team.
Hoverflies aimed to design and build an interactive object which entices performative interaction and play. This project addressed the earliest stage of the design process, in its most fluid state of emergence.
